Three part Soft Skills Training Programme for Managers and Leaders:
The Programme consists of three parts that logically build upon each other and are completed one after the other at the participants chosen pace. The content of all the Parts is linked, so it is easy to move from one Part to another, even if you do not choose to do it in one go.
Part One: “The Mindful Self” - Self Awareness - Self Control - Stress Management - Self Confidence. Can be taken as a stand alone workshop or module.
Part Two: “The Mindful Manager” - builds on techniques and routines that have been learned in Part One and then builds an understanding and awareness of others, introducing strategies to manage your team and interact with different levels of management.
Part Three: “The Mindful Leader” - takes the learnings from the first two parts and applies them to focus on the challenges of leading, inspiring and influencing others in a genuine and ethical manner.

With this in mind, I always try to “lead from behind” in my sessions, so that you can find and adopt your own comfortable philosophies and not be hijacked by others. By this I mean that I have no particular set of views, or philosophes that I believe you need to agree with, before I can help you. I know what works for me, but I am sure that many things that I believe and many things I do will most certainly not work for you. I will offer you a tasting menu of practical and theoretical information to sample, and I hope that some of it resonates with you and that you can comfortably reject much of it, because it does not feel right for you. Many times, being free to reject what doesn’t feel right is as important as accepting new ways forward. In short, I want you to effectively choose how to live your own life and not to become a clone of me.
The emphasis is very much on showing you how to use all that you are, good and bad, positive and negative, to build resilient self awareness. By learning how to accept all that is you, rather than trying to tune out the bits that you don’t like, you become free to trust yourself, build patience and learn to be more realistic and compassionate. This in turn allows you to learn how to respond in new creative ways to life’s challenges, rather than to react in the same old way as you have always done.
Being in control of yourself rather than being run by old beliefs and philosophies that have been forced upon you, is a much more successful and comfortable way to lead your life. Summary of Part One - Self Awareness. The Mindful Self:
Part One is the most important part of the Programme as it provides the essential foundations upon which the other two parts are based. Content and delivery will be varied depending on the participants level of knowledge and experience.
This Part can be easily adapted for someone who is in personal, or professional crisis and is facing burnout or poor mental, emotional or physical health as a result of high stress levels.
The module revolves around developing robust self awareness and self-management routines that will stand up to the rigors of modern-day business life. It is centred around understanding how we react to pressure, stress and chronic stress. The emphasis is on being able to change habitual reactions to more measured and effective thought out responses.
It shows not only how to turn towards difficult thoughts, feelings and emotions, but also how to use them positively to build self control, better productivity and creativity. It will enhance clarity of thought and focus.
Backed up by theory, where necessary, we set up a variety of simple and quick exercises that can be used at different points during the day to give a new flexibility of response. You will learn to use negative and positive thoughts in a constructive way that will build your confidence and trust in yourself.
You will understand how the mind and body are connected in a positive way and how you can combine feedback from each to sharpen your concentration and focus on any given task.
Following the programme and practicing the exercises and techniques will help you to discover your authentic character and allow you to strengthen existing talents and modify those that have been holding you back.
The self-awareness and confidence that you gain from this Part will reduce your stress levels, enhance your decision making and build your personal trust.
Summary of Part Two. Awareness of Others. The Mindful Manager:
Part Two Having completed and practiced the exercises and routines of Part One, you will now be ready to extend your self-awareness and confidence to increase your awareness and understanding of others around you, whether they be peers, line managers, or members of your team.
This Part centres around techniques to communicate mindfully and effectively with others whether it be verbally, by various written formats, or visually through presentations.
It will work on the clarity of thought needed to set your intention for a communication, to vary your focus from individual to group scenarios and how to choose clear, concise patterns of communication to convey your message.
Attention will be paid to learning how to assess your communication before, during and after it takes place.
Ways to become mindfully aware of others’ needs in meetings and how to ensure that every effort is taken to ‘hear and be heard’, will be covered.
We will investigate how to ‘feel what you hear’ to understand a room, or person and help you to root out ‘false news’. Time will be given to understanding body language and trusting ‘gut instinct’.
We begin to look at ways that sets the scenario for successful meetings and avoids some to the most common ways of meetings becoming ineffective.
Summary of Part Three. Influencing Others – The Mindful Leader:
Part Three will build on the last two and will be even more personal, because it will focus on your understanding of what you have learned and your experience of how you have implemented this knowledge both personally and professionally.
Some of the basic techniques will be deepened and extended to deal with more aspects of leadership and management challenges.
We will look at how to set and vary intent, depending on whether the task is personal, management, or leadership based. How focus can be manipulated depending on whether you need to set very specific goals or promote a wider overview.
Time will be taken to look at dealing with mindful conflict resolution and how to draw on skills that you have already learned. We investigate the power of compassion for self and others and the possibilities that non-judgemental self-evaluation brings to a successful and dynamic life.
As the Programme progresses, we will focus on how what you have learned can be mindfully incorporated into your business, to enhance the effectiveness of the organisation.
What Are 'Soft Skills'?
- Soft skills are your non-technical abilities that relate the following broad categories:
- Self Awareness. Your ability to understand and respond to your feelings, thoughts and emotions in a constructive manner, especially when under stress.
- Your ability to communicate effectively both verbally, non verbally, visually and in writing, with others.
- Teamwork: How you perform as a member of a team. Cooperation, friendliness and understanding the dynamics and goals of the team are central to a successful team member and team leader.
- Problem solving. Having the ability to adapt to daily challenges and change with a growth mindset. Being able to see the big picture of how change will affect you, your team and your business is a vital skill for a successful manager and leader.
- Dealing with conflict with team members, clients or suppliers. Being able to quickly and effectively understand the source of the conflict and choose effective methods to defuse and solve the conflict.
- Leadership: Building on other 'soft skills', leadership qualities will grow provided that you appear to be an authentic individual. Effective leaders learn to inspire others and allow them to build their own motivation for a task rather than using negative methods like threats or inducements.
This is just a very short summary of 'soft skills' that might also be referred to as interpersonal skills. Many people in all levels of management have very poor 'soft skills' which reduces their effectiveness, the effectiveness of their team and ultimately the effectiveness of their business.
